?Andrew van Hasselt received his medical training at The University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is professor of surgery at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and in 1985 was responsible for establishing the Division of Otorhinolaryngology at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong of which he is currently the head.

Alan Gibb was for over 24 years head of the Department of Otolaryngology of The University of St. Andrews. He then held successive appointments as Visiting Professor in Otorhinolaryngology in The National University of Malaysia, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The National University of Singapore. During his career, he received many honours, including the Presidencies of the Section of Otology of the Royal Society of Medicine and the British Association of Otolaryngologists. In 1991 he was appointed Li Dak Sum Visiting Professor in Surgery at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His interest in nasopharyngeal carcinoma was stimulated by several spells of work overseas, including Army Service in Africa in the Second World War.
