            • Acquisition of Chinese Pinyin and Hanzi
            • Paperback
            • Haiwei Zhang / Routledge
          • The Acquisition of Chinese Pinyin and Hanzi focuses on the learning of Pinyin and Hanzi among learners of Chinese as a second language (CSL) from Egypt and the United Kingdom. The objectives of this book are to explore the roles of L1 writing system background, individual differences, and meta-linguistic awareness in the acquisition of Pinyin and Hanzi.

This book presents a unique comparison of the performance in learning Chinese between two groups of CSL learners using L1 scripts with different writing directions, namely the right-to-left Arabic and the left-to-right English. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the orthographic and phonological features of Arabic, Chinese, and English, illustrating how L1 background and individual differences (such as foreign language aptitude and experience of study abroad) impact CSL learners' performance in Chinese meta-linguistic awareness (e.g., phonological awareness and phonetic radical awareness) and literacy skills (e.g., Hanzi reading and writing). Furthermore, it examines the contribution of meta-linguistic awareness to literacy skills. The book also discusses the theoretical implications for understanding the significance of phonological skills for the development of literacy skills and the pedagogical considerations for designing instructional activities for Pinyin and Hanzi in the CSL classroom.

This book is intended for researchers, graduate students, and practitioners interested in CSL teaching and learning.

            • Constitutional Change and Constitutionalism in Africa
            • Paperback
            • OUP Oxford / OUP Oxford
          • The new generation of African constitutions crafted in the 1990s marked the beginning of a trend that promised a radical transformation of the continent's governance landscape. This movement aimed to eliminate the risks of coups and political instability that had plagued Africa since the 1960s by embedding democracy and constitutionalism. However, the wave of constitutional reforms post-1990s seems to have sparked a contagious fever of making, unmaking, and remaking constitutions. The nature and frequency of these changes threaten to undermine the progress made in entrenching a culture of constitutionalism, good governance, and respect for the rule of law. It is, therefore, no surprise that there is almost universal agreement that Africa is now facing a profound crisis of democracy and constitutionalism.

Constitutional Change and Constitutionalism in Africa examines the nature and extent of these changes, which have been occurring more frequently and sometimes more arbitrarily than anticipated. Among the main questions investigated are the constitution-making process and the roles of various internal actors, such as the legislature, executive, and judiciary, as well as external actors like the African Union and Regional Economic Communities, in the different processes of constitutional change.

Ultimately, the discussions aim to explore how the processes of constitutional change, whether inevitable and unavoidable or contrived, can be conducted in a manner that does not undermine or threaten the efforts to entrench democracy, constitutionalism, good governance, and respect for the rule of law on the African continent.

            • Corporate Entrepreneurship and Sustainability
            • Paperback
            • Sarah Lai-Yin Cheah, Joshua Ng Jun Zhi / Routledge
          • This book provides detailed case studies exploring how industry-leading organizations are integrating corporate innovation and sustainability initiatives.

The book first introduces the difficulties and importance of managing innovation within established organizations. It identifies five themes key for organizations seeking to future-proof their business: external drivers in the business environment, structures for corporate entrepreneurship, modes of collaboration, sustainability as a lever for innovation, and performance management. It then provides detailed case studies of how companies across diverse sectors, such as banking, shipping, and real estate, made the choice between short-term profit and future-proofing their business. Cases are written such that they can be used independently, and a storytelling approach is used so that readers may apply the conceptual frameworks and see how theories are translated into practice. Detailed teaching notes are available for instructors, each containing a sample lesson plan, six discussion questions, suggested answers, and further readings.

A useful teaching resource for instructors and students in corporate entrepreneurship, corporate innovation, and strategic foresight.

            • Corporations and Persons
            • Paperback
            • OUP Oxford / OUP Oxford
          • We need to reimagine how we think about the firm. The dominant view of today sees corporations as relentlessly driven profit-maximizers; and, while many see this as an unfortunate reality, others maintain that a sophisticated understanding of law, economics, and morality reveals that corporations have a duty to act in this fashion. Either way, the dominant view is out of step with the needs and values of society. People, and especially members of younger generations, are clamoring for more meaningful and ethically engaged work. We also have recent memory of a global financial crisis that shook confidence in the free market system, and relatedly, there has subsequently been a diminution in trust in liberal democratic institutions and values.

This work in philosophy and applied ethics responds to these events by presenting a persons-based theory of the firm. It views the for-profit corporation as a corporate person standing in moral relationships with human persons rather than as a purely calculating or even psychopathic actor. It fills out this theory by exploring the normative dimensions of the firm's relationships with key stakeholders such as customers, employees, and shareholders; and, it recognizes a special importance to the relationship between the firm and the citizens of a democratic society, and the role this relationship plays in understanding all of the others. The resulting way of thinking about corporations is more attuned to their duties within democratic society and more ethically empowering for their personnel.

            • Derek Parfit: His Life and Thought
            • Paperback
            • OUP Oxford / OUP Oxford
          • At the time of his death in January 2017, Derek Parfit was widely regarded among philosophers as the best and most important moral philosopher in well over a century. He was also both legendarily eccentric and legendarily generous. In his later years he became increasingly reclusive in his obsessive struggle to develop his ideas and arguments about an extensive set of philosophical problems before he died. His perfectionism, meticulous concern for the truth, and openness to being proved wrong prevented him from being satisfied until he had a convincing response to every possible objection to the views he sought to defend.

Because Parfit was so reclusive, there were relatively few people who knew him well. In this volume of essays devoted to exploring his legacy, many of those to whom he was closest offer portraits of both the man and the philosopher. The overall result is a tapestry of largely converging but also in places slightly conflicting perceptions. The authors include his widow (also a philosopher), his sister, and a substantial proportion of his closest friends, all of whom were both his colleagues in philosophy and some of whom were also his former students. The volume is thus part intellectual biography and part memoir.

            • Economic Alliance, Economic Split
            • Paperback
            • Tao Chen, Jan Zofka / Routledge
          • This book delivers crucial historical background in these times, as bloc-building returns to the global economy and China and Russia massively intensify their economic cooperation. It gathers global cutting-edge research on the economic exchanges in the early years of the Cold War between the newly formed People’s Republic of China and Soviet Eastern Europe.

Based on multidimensional archival sources from China, Eastern Europe, and beyond, this book departs from the traditional Cold War accounts of superpowers and geopolitics and looks into economic practices: how Chinese officials tried to access foreign markets via the Leipzig trade fair, how the Soviet-modelled car industry had to be built with US-trained Chinese engineers, or how socialist bureaucrats rationalized the giant projects of factory-building in China with developing future markets for industrial products on a global scale. Such a perspective helps to understand how economic rationales and second-tier actors contributed to the forming of the short-lived but far-reaching alliance and how cooperation on the ground for a while was able to survive, while generally mutual disappointment about the quick exhaustion of the cooperation’s benefits benefitted the swift split. These insights also provide a basis for rethinking the relationship between politics and economy in socialist regime-building during the Cold War.

This book will appeal to scholars and students of Cold War history, international relations, and economic history. The chapters in this book were originally published as special issue of European Review of History: Revue européenne d'histoire.

            • Elementary Forms of Corruption
            • Hardcover
            • Aaron Ansell / HAU
          • Seeks to better understand the nature of corruption through a case study of a rural Brazilian community’s response to the country’s political fraud.

The Elementary Forms of Corruption is an ethnographic history of rural Brazilians’ shifting moral imagination in the context of their country’s recent corruption scandals and political crises. The book explores how Brazil’s cosmopolitan models of corruption, both left-wing and right-wing varieties, found their way to a small sertanejo (hinterland) municipality in the northeast, where people understood corruption very differently. Reckoning with both the leftist Workers’ Party, which sought to liberate sertanejos from patron-client relations, and the New Right populists who sought to stamp out the “communists” threatening the patriarchal family, the people of the sertanejo made recourse to older ideas about corruption—such as the betrayal of kinship obligations and communal trust—to decipher and shape national politics.

Challenging the discipline’s current aversion to generalizable, analytic categories that are useful for comparison across cultures or historical periods, The Elementary Forms of Corruption posits a general framework for understanding corruption at its most elementary level: the degradation of a moral gradient through the transgressive rechanneling of those currencies (e.g., gifts, favors) that sustain communal bonds when properly directed.

            • Endogenous Money and the Supermultiplier
            • Paperback
            • Maria Cristina Barbieri Góes, Óscar Dejuán Asenjo, Riccardo Pariboni, Ricardo Summa / Routledge
          • This book explores the Supermultiplier model which has rapidly evolved into a key analytical framework, embraced and debated by post-Keynesian economists across various schools of thought. At its core, the model extends Keynesian principles to the long run, asserting that economic growth and productive capacity are fundamentally shaped by effective demand. Central to this framework is the concept of autonomous demand—components of aggregate demand such as government spending, exports, and residential investment and credit-financed consumption that operate independently of income flows, driving growth and capital accumulation.

This book ventures into the relatively uncharted territory of how these autonomous demand components are financed. It highlights the indispensable role of endogenous money creation—credit expansion, state money, and external sector financing—in sustaining demand-led growth. Drawing from recent contributions, the book integrates credit and debt dynamics into the Supermultiplier model, offering insights into the financial underpinnings of autonomous demand.

A vital resource for understanding modern monetary economies, this book bridges theoretical advancements and practical policy implications, making it essential reading for economists, policymakers, and those intrigued by the intersection of demand, finance, and growth.

The chapters in this book were originally published in Review of Political Economy.
