Reading was a gendered act in the early modern period; across genres, women were depicted negotiating a range of gendered behavioral norms. From religious texts, romances, and cookbooks, to news, household records, and scientific and medical treatises, Jeans draws on archival sources across a wide range of writing types to offer a more complete picture of women’s reading experiences, ultimately questioning the accepted notion of the woman reader itself.

          • The current framework of EU regulation concerning capital markets is complex and partly inconsistent in the way that it is applied in the various Member States. Through the Capital Markets Union (CMU) project the European Union is pursuing the goal of establishing a true single market for capital in Europe. Regulating EU Capital Markets Union: Market Conduct and Corporate Disclosure in a European Code is the second of a two-volume series proposing the codification of EU legislature as a way to establish this goal.
            This volume focuses on a reform of market abuse, short selling, corporate disclosure and public takeovers. In doing so, it considers the fact that financial markets law is now characterized by the idea of promoting sustainable investments. In addition, the book proposes to introduce union wide civil liability and to harmonise administrative sanctions. A higher degree of harmonisation will foster greater market integration and remove barriers to cross-border activity.
            A holistic codification follows the framework of Better Regulation, namely the principle of proportionality and of a comprehensive and coherent approach. The book proposes relief of regulatory burden for companies listed on regulated markets to incentivize growth companies to go public. Codification allows for a comprehensive approach, thus the consideration of all affected aspects. Furthermore, a codification fits into the objective of following a coherent approach- codification is consistent with the high-level and long-term policy objectives of the Capital Markets Union and the Savings and Investment Union.

            Using the example of Sweden, the authors reassess the grand strategies of small states in international politics from the end of World War II until its new membership in NATO in 2024. Utilizing role theory, they identify a small state's grand strategy through specific national foreign policy roles which at certain times coalesce into master roles. Four foreign policy action strategies, building on domestic agency and the influence of systemic structures, depict this domestic process of role adaptation.

            Sweden's foreign policy roles were shaped according to the degree of autonomy and integration deemed necessary for security, economic development, and social cohesion as perceived by the domestic political elite. The ensuing empirical analysis identifies this set of evolving roles in an increasingly unstable international security environment. The authors thus explore how a small state can develop certain roles over time and how the dominant roles can coalesce into an overarching grand strategy.

            The Oxford Studies in Grand Strategy is a major new series of cutting-edge monographs that examine the grand strategies of states, and those intergovernmental organizations and nonstate actors who credibly aspire to sovereignty. Books concentrate on the contemporary aspects of grand strategy, while paying due respect to the historical antecedents of a nation's grand strategy and their relevance for a leadership's current choices. The series is pluralistic in terms of theory and method, and maintains a broad view of the ways, means, and ends that undergird a grand strategy.
